The Deuce s01e01 (2017)

The Deuce is an American crime drama television series created by David Simon and George Pelecanos. Its first episode, titled “Pilot,” premiered on HBO on September 10, 2017, following an earlier online release on August 25.

Set in New York City’s Times Square in 1971, the episode introduces a world of street prostitution, organized crime, corruption, and struggling nightlife businesses. Through the lives of several interconnected characters, it explores the early development of what would eventually become the modern American pornography industry.

The story centers on identical twin brothers Vincent and Frankie Martino, both played by James Franco. While Vincent works long hours as a bartender trying to maintain a stable life, Frankie is a reckless gambler whose growing debts bring him into conflict with dangerous criminal figures.

Alongside their story, the episode introduces Candy, an independent sex worker, several street prostitutes and their pimps, and Abby Parker, a privileged college student whose unexpected encounter with the police leads her into the complicated world of Times Square.

Directed by Michelle MacLaren, the pilot establishes the gritty atmosphere, complex characters, and social realities that define the series.

Episode Summary

In 1971, Times Square is a place of neon lights, crowded streets, adult entertainment businesses, and people trying to survive through whatever opportunities they can find. Beneath the excitement of New York’s nightlife lies a darker world controlled by pimps, criminals, and corrupt officials.

Vincent Martino is a hardworking bartender who spends much of his time trying to support his family in Brooklyn. His identical twin brother, Frankie, lives a very different life. Careless with money and addicted to gambling, Frankie has accumulated substantial debts to mobsters and bookies.

When Vincent is attacked while delivering money for his employer, the incident reminds him that his brother’s reckless behavior has consequences for both of them. Already frustrated by his troubled marriage to Andrea, Vincent begins questioning the direction of his life.

Meanwhile, Frankie continues getting himself into trouble. His debts create problems that Vincent cannot easily ignore, forcing the more responsible brother to consider how far he is willing to go to protect his twin.

Across Times Square, the episode introduces several women working in the street prostitution business. Candy, whose real name is Eileen Merrell, is an experienced sex worker who operates independently rather than allowing a pimp to control her earnings. She understands the dangers of the streets and has developed her own methods of surviving.

Unlike Candy, Ashley works under the control of pimp C.C. She has developed feelings for him, believing that their relationship is more meaningful than a business arrangement. However, C.C. soon becomes interested in Lori, a young woman who has recently arrived from Minnesota.

Lori is not as inexperienced as C.C. initially assumes. She understands the opportunities and dangers involved in working the streets and makes her own decision to enter the business. Her arrival immediately creates jealousy and tension between her and Ashley.

Another pimp, Larry Brown, manages a group of women that includes Darlene, a gentle and vulnerable young sex worker. Their relationship reveals the different forms of exploitation and control that exist within the street economy.

Elsewhere, Abby Parker, an NYU student from a privileged background, becomes involved in an unexpected situation when her friends ask her to purchase amphetamines. Her attempt to obtain the drugs leads to her arrest and brings her into contact with police officers familiar with the people operating around Times Square.

One of the officers she encounters is Chris Alston, who understands the complicated relationships between pimps, sex workers, and local businesses. After being released, Abby finds herself drawn toward the nightlife and the people she has just encountered.

Her meeting with Vincent sparks an unexpected attraction, and she begins questioning the conventional path expected of someone from her social background.

As the episode moves between these different lives, the characters’ stories begin to overlap. Vincent’s desire for independence, Frankie’s criminal problems, Candy’s determination to control her own work, and the ambitions of the people surrounding Times Square all point toward a rapidly changing city.

The episode closes with a disturbing incident involving C.C. and Ashley, revealing just how dangerous the relationships within this world can become.

What Makes The Deuce S01E01 Worth Watching?

1. A Gritty Portrait of 1970s New York

The pilot recreates the atmosphere of Times Square in the early 1970s, a period when the neighborhood was associated with adult entertainment, street crime, prostitution, and struggling businesses.

Its detailed production design captures the streets, bars, hotels, and nightlife of an era that feels very different from modern New York.

2. James Franco’s Dual Performance

James Franco plays both Vincent and Frankie, two identical brothers whose personalities and lifestyles could hardly be more different.

Vincent is practical and hardworking, while Frankie is impulsive and irresponsible. Their contrasting personalities create much of the episode’s tension and establish an important relationship for the series.

3. A Complex Female Perspective

The episode gives considerable attention to the women working in Times Square, particularly Candy, Ashley, Lori, and Darlene.

Rather than treating them as interchangeable background characters, the series introduces their individual circumstances, ambitions, relationships, and survival strategies.

Candy is especially interesting because she attempts to maintain control over her own work in an environment where many women are subjected to exploitation.

4. Organized Crime and Street-Level Power

The pilot shows how criminal organizations influence everyday life in Times Square. Pimps, bookies, mobsters, and corrupt authorities operate within overlapping systems of money and control.

These relationships create a dangerous environment where personal decisions can have serious consequences.

5. A Story About the Birth of a New Industry

One of the central ideas behind The Deuce is the transformation of the adult entertainment business into a major commercial industry.

The first episode establishes the social and economic conditions that eventually allow this transformation to happen, connecting individual ambitions with broader changes in American culture.

6. Strong Direction and Realistic Storytelling

Director Michelle MacLaren brings a documentary-like quality to the episode. Instead of rushing through a single central storyline, the pilot moves between several characters and allows their lives to develop naturally.

This approach creates a rich, interconnected portrait of a neighborhood undergoing significant social and economic changes.
